Prince Harry and Meghan ‘overshadowed Kate Middleton’ – now she can celebrate

As the year 2025 draws to a close, the Princess of Wales, Catherine, is likely more eager than most to welcome a fresh start. Following what has been one of the most challenging years of her life, she has an exciting reason to celebrate as her 43rd birthday approaches on January 9.

“This birthday will be significant in so many ways,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond exclusively tells OK! “It symbolizes the beginning of what will hopefully be a much brighter year and marks the end of a year that has been grueling for her family. While turning 43 might feel daunting to some, I believe Catherine will embrace it with gratitude, particularly as she is recovering and in relatively good health. For the Princess, every day must feel especially precious now, making every birthday a moment to celebrate.”

Given its proximity to Christmas, Catherine’s birthday is traditionally a modest family affair with Prince William and their children. However, this year’s celebration may take on a more joyous tone following last year’s challenges, which included health concerns, and previous years marked by public drama, such as the release of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare and their announcement of stepping back from royal duties.

“Catherine’s perspective on her birthday has likely shifted,” Jennie continues. “In her younger years, she might not have thought twice about turning 43, but her recent birthdays have all been overshadowed by significant events: the Sussexes’ announcement in 2020, Harry’s book launch in 2023, and last year, the anxiety of facing major abdominal surgery just days after her birthday. This birthday, however, will be an opportunity for pure celebration.”

Despite his reserved demeanor, Prince William is expected to shower Catherine with affection on her special day. “Her husband and children will undoubtedly spoil her,” Jennie adds. “Even though it falls on a school day, I imagine there will be thoughtful gifts like luxurious pampering products, soft cashmere items for her comfort, and perhaps even a romantic breakfast tray from William, who Catherine once said is quite skilled at making breakfast.”

In addition to her immediate family, Catherine’s parents and siblings will likely play a role in the celebration. The unwavering support of her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, along with her sister Pippa and brother James, has been a source of comfort throughout her recovery. “A cozy dinner with her family and perhaps a cake baked by her mum—with help from Charlotte—seems like Catherine’s ideal way to mark the day,” Jennie suggests.

Throughout her health journey, Prince William’s steadfast presence has been invaluable to Catherine. The depth of his support was poignantly captured on the program for her Together at Christmas carol concert in December. Beneath an illustration of a snowy scene, the words “How did I help?” were answered with “You were by my side, which was everything.”

Jennie elaborates, “The message on the program spoke volumes about how vulnerable Catherine has felt this year. Cancer is an incredibly personal journey, and having loved ones nearby can make all the difference. Her words also serve as a reminder to others supporting cancer patients: simply being present can mean the world.”

As 2025 unfolds, there are many milestones on the horizon for the royal couple, including their 14th wedding anniversary and the second anniversary of Shaping Us, Catherine’s initiative on early years development, which she calls her “life’s work.” With her mother Carole’s milestone 70th birthday on January 31, the year promises to be eventful.

Although Catherine made select public appearances in 2024—such as Trooping the Colour and Wimbledon—she is expected to gradually resume royal duties in 2025 at a measured pace. “William has expressed his hope that Catherine will join him on a tour this year, which would be a significant step in her return to public life,” Jennie notes. “But after such a health battle, she will be cautious about overexerting herself. We’ll see more of her, but it will be on her terms.”

As William continues to modernize his royal role, he has emphasized his desire to “do things differently” and with a “smaller r in royal.” This philosophy was evident during his November trip to Cape Town for the Earthshot Prize, where he spoke about a more grounded approach to his duties. Jennie praises this vision, saying, “I hope it means an end to unnecessary formalities like bowing and curtseying. Perhaps we’ll see a more approachable William and Catherine.”

Preparing their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—for their future royal roles also remains a priority. Jennie believes the couple’s approach, which includes introducing their children to charity work in a low-profile manner, is wise. “Their children will spend a lifetime in the spotlight, so allowing them a semblance of normal childhood now is crucial.”

After the difficulties of 2024, Catherine’s strength and grace have shone through, making her upcoming birthday all the more special. Like Queen Elizabeth II’s desire to leave her “Annus Horribilis” behind, the Princess and her family are undoubtedly ready to move forward. With so much to look forward to, her loved ones will surely make this a birthday to remember.
