Ten years of marriage, and I never imagined I’d be scheming in the shadows, plotting the perfect revenge. But life has a funny way of surprising you.

Mark and I had what most people would call a solid marriage. We had our ups and downs, but overall, I thought we were a strong team. That was, until things started to change.
“Hey, Mark,” I’d ask casually, noticing his sudden interest in working out, “You hitting the gym a lot these days?”
He’d smile, barely looking up from his phone. “Yeah, just trying to stay in shape, you know? Gotta keep up with the younger guys at work.”

“New cologne?” I commented one morning as we were getting ready for the day.
Mark grinned, almost sheepish. “Figured it was time for a change. Do you like it, Jodie?”
I nodded, forcing a smile. “It’s nice, different.”

But it wasn’t just the cologne. He started whitening his teeth, something he’d never cared about before.
“Wow, Mark, your teeth are really white lately,” I teased one evening.

“What’s so funny?” I’d ask, trying to keep my tone light.
“Oh, nothing,” he’d reply quickly, locking his phone. “Just some work stuff. You wouldn’t be interested.”
My gut was screaming at me that something was wrong. When you’ve been married as long as we had, you know when things are off. But I didn’t want to believe it. I wanted to trust him, to believe that this was just a phase, maybe a mid-life crisis. Still, I started paying closer attention.

One night, Mark was texting on the couch, as usual. I glanced over his shoulder, pretending to look for the TV remote. That’s when I saw it. The message read, “Can’t wait to see you tonight, Jess.”
My heart sank. Jess? Who was Jess? My mind raced as I tried to piece it together, but I knew I needed more than just a name. I needed proof. I had to be sure before I confronted him. I didn’t want him to weasel his way out with some lame excuse.

First, I sent Jessica a little gift. It was a beautiful box, wrapped with a big red bow, something that looked like it came from a high-end store. But inside, it wasn’t anything fancy. No, inside was the tackiest lingerie I could find. Think neon green with lace in all the wrong places—something that would make anyone cringe. Along with it, I included a note: “Wear this for our date. Can’t wait to see you in it. Love, Mark.”

And that was exactly how I wanted it.
I knew the key to my plan was making Mark believe I was really leaving town. So, I casually mentioned it over dinner.
“By the way, Mark,” I said, keeping my voice light, “I’ve got to go out of town for a few days. Some big client meetings. I’ll be leaving tomorrow.”
Mark looked up, trying to mask the excitement in his eyes. “Tomorrow? How long will you be gone?”

“Just until Friday,” I replied, watching him closely.
He nodded, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “I’ll miss you.”
“Miss you too,” I said, forcing a smile.
That night, I packed a suitcase, making sure Mark saw me putting in just enough clothes to make it look real. I even booked a fake flight on my phone, letting him glimpse the confirmation. The next morning, I kissed him goodbye at the door.

As the sun set, I saw Jessica’s car pull up. She got out, looking a bit nervous but eager, her dress clinging to her in all the right places. She walked to the door, and Mark greeted her with a warm smile. They shared a quick kiss before disappearing inside.

“To us,” he said, raising his glass.
“To us,” Jessica echoed, her voice full of admiration.
They clinked glasses, sipping their wine with smiles on their faces. The scene made my stomach turn, but I kept watching. After dinner, they moved to the living room, getting cozy on the couch. Mark leaned in close, whispering something that made Jessica giggle.

“Excuse me for a minute,” Jessica said suddenly, standing up. “I’ll be right back.”
I knew what was coming next. I quickly slipped around to the back of the house, letting myself in through the kitchen door. I could hear Jessica in the bathroom, changing into the lingerie I’d sent her. I positioned myself in the hallway, just out of sight.
A minute later, Jessica emerged, wearing the neon-green lingerie. She struck a pose, her face full of anticipation.

Mark turned to look at her, and his reaction was everything I’d hoped for. His face twisted in disgust.
“What the hell are you wearing?” he snapped.
Jessica’s smile faltered. “I thought… didn’t you send this to me?”

Mark’s face turned red with frustration. “You look ridiculous! What is this? Some kind of joke?”
Jessica’s eyes filled with confusion. “But you told me to wear it! You said you couldn’t wait to see me in it!”
“I would never send you something like that!” Mark shouted. “You look like a clown!”

That’s when I stepped into the room. “Surprise,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension.
Mark and Jessica turned to look at me, their faces frozen in shock. Mark’s mouth hung open, and Jessica stood there in the hideous lingerie, looking like a deer caught in headlights.
“What’s going on here?” I asked, my tone sweet.
Mark stammered, “This… this isn’t what it looks like.”
“Oh, I think it’s exactly what it looks like,” I replied.

Jessica, still clinging to some hope, said, “He sent this to me. He said he wanted to see me in it.”
I turned to her, my expression softening. “Oh, sweetheart, he didn’t send you that. I did.”
Jessica’s eyes widened as the truth hit her. She looked at me, then at Mark, and back at me, her face draining of color.
“You… you did this?” she whispered.
“Yes,” I said, my voice steady. “I wanted to make sure you both understood exactly what you’ve been playing with.”

“Oh, it’s exactly what it seems,” I said coldly. “And now, it’s over.”
Jessica bolted from the room, humiliated. Mark turned to me, desperate, and fell to his knees. “Please,” he begged. “Don’t do this.”

“Pack your things and get out,” I said. Mark stared at me, then trudged upstairs to pack. As I watched him go, a strange calm washed over me. It was over, and I was ready to move on.
