Jimmy Carter was a remarkable individual who deserved a fitting farewell, and by all accounts, he received just that.
The former U.S. President had been in poor health for a while before his death on December 29, 2024. In fact, he was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and began end-of-life hospice care in early 2023.
Despite surpassing even the most hopeful expectations by living nearly two years after entering hospice care, Carter passed away just two days before the new year, sparking a wave of tributes.
Considering the significant influence the former peanut farmer-turned-politician had—both during his presidency and beyond—it was no surprise that his funeral, held on Thursday, January 9, was a notable event, drawing a prominent guest list from U.S. politics and beyond.

During the funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, one of the most emotional moments came when country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who were close friends of Jimmy Carter, performed a heartfelt version of John Lennon’s Imagine. This was especially meaningful as it was just over a year after they had sung the same song at the funeral of Carter’s wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
The symmetry of the tributes at the two funerals deeply moved many people, who expressed their condolences on social media.
After the Washington service, Carter’s body was flown back to Georgia for a private funeral in his hometown of Plains. The ceremony was held at Maranatha Baptist Church, where Carter had once taught Sunday school.
Following the service, Carter’s remains were transported by motorcade for a private burial next to his wife.
