Donald Trump has hinted that he may step away from his role as president to pursue a full-time career in hosting.
The 79-year-old Republican, currently serving his second term in the White House, raised the idea on Tuesday (23 December), asking followers whether they would support such a decision.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump questioned whether he should leave the presidency and shift his focus entirely to hosting after being invited to host the upcoming Trump Kennedy Honors. The event, airing at 8 p.m. EST tonight, will recognize stars including Sylvester Stallone, Michael Crawford, KISS, George Strait, and Gloria Gaynor.
He wrote: “THE TRUMP KENNEDY CENTER HONORS will be broadcast tonight, on CBS, and Stream on Paramount+. Tune in at 8 P.M. EST!”
“At the request of the Board, and just about everybody else in America, I am hosting the event. Tell me what you think of my ‘Master of Ceremony’ abilities. If really good, would you like me to leave the Presidency in order to make ‘hosting’ a full time job?”
While it remains uncertain whether the president is seriously considering stepping down to pursue a celebrity hosting career or simply joking with supporters, this would not be Trump’s first foray into the spotlight. Notably, 2025 marks ten years since he last hosted The Apprentice.
The business-themed reality series ran from 2004 to 2015 with Trump as its host and is widely credited with elevating his public profile ahead of the 2016 election. His role on the show helped transform him from a businessman into a household name.
“In the show, he appeared to demonstrate impeccable business instincts and unparalleled wealth, even though his businesses had barely survived multiple bankruptcies and faced yet another when he was cast,” an article from Slate noted at the time.
However, during his initial presidential run, Trump was dismissed from The Apprentice after making remarks about Mexican immigrants that conflicted with NBC’s values.
Trump’s role as host of Tuesday night’s honors has also drawn controversy, particularly because the event is being held at the newly renamed Trump-Kennedy Center—a change strongly opposed by members of the Kennedy family.
The venue was originally known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Located in Washington, D.C., it serves as a memorial to the former president, who was assassinated in 1963.
On December 18, the center’s board voted unanimously to rename the building to include Donald Trump’s name alongside Kennedy’s, officially rebranding it as the Trump-Kennedy Center.
However, relatives of the late president have voiced firm opposition to the decision.
Joe Kennedy III, JFK’s grandnephew, said: “The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law. It can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.”
