Be careful, you should never write these words on your checked baggage

Be mindful when labeling your checked baggage, as certain details can raise security concerns or lead to travel delays. While luggage tags are essential for identifying and recovering lost bags, they can also expose you to risks if not used carefully.

    The Purpose of Luggage Tags

Luggage tags help airline staff match bags with their rightful owners. However, sharing too much personal information can make you vulnerable to scams or theft. Criminals can exploit the details you provide, so it’s important to be cautious about what you include.

    What Information Should You Avoid?

To protect your privacy and security, avoid including the following details on your luggage tags:

    • Full home address: Instead of listing your entire address, use just your city and state. This ensures identification without revealing where you live.
    • Personal phone number: Instead of your personal number, consider using a work number or a temporary contact method.
    • Email address: Similar to phone numbers, email addresses can be misused for scams or unwanted contact.
    • Personal identification numbers: Never include sensitive details like your Social Security number or passport number.

    Risks of Sharing Personal Information

While it may seem responsible to include your name and home address on your bag, it can lead to unintended risks.

If someone sees your address, they may know when you’re traveling, making your home a target for burglary. Criminals have also used luggage tags for illegal activities.

In one case, Brazilian authorities arrested a group of drug smugglers who copied passenger details onto their own suitcases, using them to transport drugs.

Another tragic incident occurred in 2010 when a 50-year-old woman from Hong Kong, Lam Tran Dinh, was sentenced to death in Malaysia after unknowingly carrying a suitcase containing 1.8 kg of drugs.

She had simply helped an elderly woman with her bag at customs, unaware of the hidden contraband. In Malaysia, drug trafficking involving more than 15 grams is punishable by death.

Safer Alternatives for Labeling Your Luggage

Instead of writing personal details on your luggage tag, consider these safer options:

    • Use a distinctive tag design: A unique luggage tag can help you identify your bag quickly without needing to list personal details.
    • Limited information on a business card: If contact information is necessary, use a business card with minimal details.
    • Digital luggage tags: These can be updated via an app, allowing you to change your information without physically writing it down.

By taking these precautions, you can ensure your baggage remains identifiable while reducing security risks during travel.
