9 Things You Should Never Plug Into a Power Strip

In today’s world, it’s hard to imagine life without electricity. All our gadgets and appliances rely on it, and the need for power outlets seems endless. However, many homes lack sufficient power outlets to keep everything running, leading us to depend heavily on power strips. But beware—plugging high-wattage appliances into power strips can turn them into dangerous fire hazards.

    1. Oven: Although ovens aren’t used continuously, they are power-hungry appliances that should never be plugged into a power strip. They need their own dedicated wall outlet on a separate circuit.

    2. Refrigerator: Refrigerators require a lot of power and cycle on and off frequently, which can easily overload a power strip and cause damage. Like ovens, refrigerators need their own dedicated outlet.

    3. Washing Machine: Washing machines draw a significant amount of power when in use, often up to 1400 watts. This puts them dangerously close to the maximum load of most power strips. They should not share a receptacle with other devices, especially since they often run unattended for long periods.

    4. Portable Heaters: Portable heaters use about 1,500 watts on their high setting and usually run for extended periods, making them unsuitable for power strips.

    5. Microwave: Microwaves consume a lot of energy when operating. They should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip.

    6. Coffee Maker: Many people are unaware of how much power coffee makers use. These appliances should never be plugged into power strips or extension cords.

    7. Toaster: Despite their small size, toasters use a lot of energy. They should be plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip.

    8. Another Power Strip: Power strips are not designed to be used in conjunction with each other. Doing so violates most safety codes and can easily lead to electrical system overloads.

    9. Electronics (Computer, TV, Router): While these devices might not use a lot of power individually, they are sensitive to surges. Plugging them into a power strip can result in damage during a power surge. Use a surge protector to safeguard these devices.

Remember to always check the power capacity of your power strip before plugging in any device. It’s essential for safety and can prevent potential fire hazards.
